Man Charged With Robbing Loop Bank

A man has been charged with robbing a bank Friday afternoon in the Loop.

Timothy M. Brown, 53, was charged with one federal count of bank robbery in a complaint filed Saturday in U.S. District Court.

At 1:22 p.m., Brown approached the counter at the Bank of America branch at 135 S. LaSalle St. and handed the teller a deposit slip that said "$1,000.00," according to the federal complaint.

The teller asked the robber if he had an account with the bank and he replied, "no just give it to me," according to the complaint. The teller tried to get the bank manager and the suspect said, "No, don't move, just give it to me."

The teller realized the bank was being robbed, took cash from the drawer and gave it to the robber, who left the bank with $700, according to the complaint.

Another employee suspected the teller was being robbed and notified the bank's security guard, who is an off-duty Chicago Police officer, according to the complaint. The security guard followed the suspect out of the bank and arrested him about a block and half away.

Brown was returned to the bank and immediately identified as the suspect by the teller, according to the complaint. The stolen cash was also found in his right pant pocket.

Brown, who is believed to be homeless, appeared in court Saturday and was ordered held pending his next appearance, authorities said.

The FBI believed the same suspect in Friday's robbery was also responsible for a robbery the day before at a Chase Bank branch at 2 N. LaSalle. Brown has not been charged with that robbery.
