Proposed Crackdown On Tow Trucks Lacks Teeth, Watchdog Says

(CBS) -- A crackdown on predatory tow truck companies may be coming soon.

More than 30 aldermen have already expressed support for a proposed "bill of rights" for motorists.

Under the plan, tow truck drivers would have to put dashboard cameras in all trucks so that, in the event of a dispute, the video that could be used for evidence.

Anwar Bhimani, owner of God Bless Towing Company, agrees that some firms are not playing fair.

"A lot of drivers, they will rob you with both hands," he tells CBS 2's Audrina Bigos.

The so-called bill of rights includes 10 new rules, such as the requirement to clearly post tow zone signs.

Also, tow truck drivers would have to snap a picture of the car before it's put on a hitch.

Mike Brockway, who runs the Expired Meter website that examines city transportation policy, is doubtful about the plan. The city of Chicago and the Illinois Commerce Commission would need to create a process to address the problems and resolve complaints.

"I don't think there's any teeth to it," Brockway says.

Some tow truck drivers expressed concern about the cost of installing cameras.

The plan could be approved next month.
