Kings Nab 8th Slot In Draft Lottery Tiebreaker

By Cody Westerlund--

(CBS) The Sacramento Kings nabbed the eighth slot in an NBA Draft lottery tiebreaker Friday afternoon, meaning the top-10 protected first-round pick they owe the Bulls has an infinitesimal chance of conveying to Chicago this season.

For the Kings to fall back to No. 11 and the Bulls then be awarded the pick, three teams slotted from Nos. 9 to 14 would have to win the three lottery spots. The top three spots are doled out in a weighted lottery, with the Nos. 4-14 picks being slotted by worst record on down.

For reference, the No. 9 team has a 1.7-percent chance to win the top pick, while the No. 14 spot has a 0.5-percent chance.

The Kings won the random drawing tiebreaker over the Nuggets and Bucks. Had Sacramento fallen to 10th, there would've been about a 9 percent chance it would fall back to No. 11.

The pick the Kings owe the Bulls will meet its day of reckoning next year in 2017, when it's still top-10 protected. If that Sacramento pick again doesn't convey, the Kings will instead convey a second-round pick to the Bulls, protected for selections 56-60.

With their own pick in this year's draft, the Bulls will likely select at No. 14 in this year's draft. Because they had the best record among lottery teams, Chicago has a 0.5-percent chance of winning the top pick.

The NBA Draft lottery will take place May 17. The draft will take place June 23.
