Mayor To Implement Police Task Force Recommendations

CHICAGO (CBS/AP) - Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago's new police superintendent say the city will immediately implement about a third of the recommendations made last week by a police accountability task force.

The mayor's office says Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson outlined the proposed police reforms Thursday morning.

Emanuel's office says Chicago also is developing an action plan to address the remaining recommendations of the Task Force on Police Accountability.

The task force recommended sweeping changes in its April 13 report on the nation's third-largest police force.

The report said Chicago police have alienated blacks and Hispanics for decades by using excessive force and honoring a code of silence.

A statement from the mayor's office said reforms range from strengthening the department's accountability system to improving training.

Specifically, 911 call takers will be given additional training, the Police Department will increase the number of Tasers for officers and expand the use of officer body cameras.

The city will also take steps to reform the way the Independent Police Review Authority reviews cases against police officers, including developing precise discipline guidelines for misconduct.
