Cubs' David Ross Emotional, 'Choked Up' After Catching No-Hitter For 1st Time

(CBS) It was just a couple days ago on the flight from St. Louis to Cincinnati that David Ross was asking fellow Cubs catcher Miguel Montero was it was like to catch a no-hitter.

A 15-year veteran, Ross had never caught a no-hitter at that point.

"Miggy's caught two of them -- I'm like, 'Man, that's pretty special,'" Ross said on the Mully and Hanley Show on Friday morning. "And we were just talking about what it's like."

For Ross, the script couldn't have been drawn up better. On Thursday evening, about 24 hours after that chat and in his final season in the big leagues before retirement, the 39-year-old Ross finally caught his first no-hitter, when ace Jake Arrieta accomplished the feat for the second time in his career in Chicago's 16-0 win at Cincinnati.

"It comes to fruition here in my next start," Ross said. "So I'm excited man. I don't know, I'm on cloud nine. It's one of those things you don't ever think will happen until it happens.

"Jake was in cruise control. It was a lot of fun."

Shortly after the game, Arrieta texted his wife, Brittany, that he "did it for Rossy." That his Cubs teammates wanted the no-hitter so much for Ross made him emotional.

"It was such an emotional night, a roller coaster of emotions throughout the night," Ross said. "It's something I always wanted to do. And again, to see the happiness in my teammates for me and I get home and read that on Twitter, it's like the eyeballs start welling up. It was like 2:30, 3 o'clock in the morning and I couldn't sleep and I was just flipping through Twitter reading, and that got me a little choked up."

Ross shared texts with Cubs executives Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer afterward. He joked that the no-hitter and all the fun could make him rethink retirement -- if they're willing to pony up around $16 million for his services in 2017.

"If they make me the qualifying offer, I'll be back," Ross said with a laugh.
