Sex Abuse Survivors: Don't Keep Silent

(CBS) -- April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On Friday, some survivors and their supporters found a powerful way to share their message without saying a word.

Survivors of sexual assault and their supporters came together to raise awareness, CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports.

Some wore shirts detailing stories of sexual abuse.  Others passed out pamphlets or held signs with the staggering statistics: 1 in 3 women globally will be raped or beaten in her lifetime, and 1 in 3 girls will be sexually assaulted.

"I was 12 years old and I was spending the weekend with my best friend at her father's house. And at some point during that weekend is when he molested me in his basement," survivor Robin Hopkins says.

Organizers of Friday's event say it's important for survivors of sexual abuse to know they are not alone. They encourage all victims to call the Chicago Rape Crisis Hotline at 1-888-293-2080.
