Chicago Area Mom Shot On Wisconsin Interstate Has Died

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A suburban Chicago woman has died after being shot in drive-by shooting along Wisconsin interstate.

The man who opened fire on Tracy Czaczkowski's vehicle Sunday was already wanted for shooting and killing a man earlier that day, the Sauk County Sheriff's Office said.

Czaczkowski's husband was driving their family, including two young children, home from Dells on Interstate 90/94 when the suspect passed in a Chervolet Blazer, rolled down his window and fired three rounds at the other vehicle, police said.

The gunman eventually was shot by police on I-90/94, an encounter caught on video.

That suspect, Zachary T. Hays, 20, of West Allis remains hospitalized, officials said Tuesday. Investigators from several counties are continuing to determine what charges will be brought.

His brother, Jeremy A. Hays, 30, is being held on a tentative charge of weapons possession by a felon, officials said.

Czaczkowski, 44, was hit in the neck.

A family friend says she was on life support Monday and authorities said she died on Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities in Wisconsin believe the shooting of the family's car was random.

Hays was linked to the fatal shooting of a 42-year-old man in West Allis.

Czaczkowski's husband is a DEA agent and in a statement, the agency said, "The family would like thank everyone for their prayers and out pouring of support for Tracy."

A gofundme account has been set up to benefit their two children.
