Cubs Call Up C.J. Edwards As 26th Man For Doubleheader

(CBS) The Cubs have called up right-hander C.J. Edwards to be their 26th man during Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Padres. He'll provide depth after the Cubs used seven pitchers in Tuesday night's 8-7 win at Wrigley Field.

Edwards had a 3.86 ERA in five appearances during a short debut big league stint in 2015. He has a 2.38 ERA in 11 1/3 innings at Triple-A Iowa this season.

Right-hander Kyle Hendricks will start the 12:05 p.m. opener for the Cubs, while right-hander John Lackey will throw in the 7:05 p.m. nightcap.

In Game 1, manager Joe Maddon has moved second baseman Ben Zobrist to the lead-off spot in the order as Dexter Fowler rests in the opener. Zobrist has been hot lately, hitting .448 in his last eight games and and going on an RBI tear mostly out of the No. 5 spot. Jason Heyward will play center for the Cubs, while Kris Bryant plays right field. Javy Baez will play third base again.
