Restaurant Owner's 911 Ticket Prompts Fight With City Hall
CHICAGO (CBS) -- It started with a young man's murder inside a restaurant.
Then, the business owner was ticketed and threatened with being shutdown
Why?
For not calling 911, even though others made that call.
The deadly shooting happened at Mimi's restaurant, in a area of Humboldt Park that doesn't flinch for police sirens.
The victim, Kejuan Jarrett, had placed an order when somebody shot him multiple times.
Mimi helped comfort that victim and others called for help.
But because Mimi, who is active in promoting community events, didn't make the call herself, she got a ticket, which could have led to her losing her business license.
So, she hired a lawyer, who called the ticket "draconian" and "preposterous."
After CBS 2 started to make inquiries, the city now says, upon further review, the ticket will be tossed and the city will "not pursue any violations" against the owner.
