Chicago Police Officer Facing Misconduct Charges In Suspect's Beating
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 40-year-old Chicago Police officer has been charged with official misconduct, accused of beating a handcuffed patient at Jackson Park hospital two years ago.
The official misconduct charge against Officer Clauzell Gause is a Class 3 felony.
If he's convicted, he faces the possibility of probation on up to five years in prison.
Gause is accused of beating a patient who was in handcuffs at Jackson Park Hospital.
The incident is on surveillance video.
Police say Gause was relieved of his police powers two years ago.
His supporters are speaking out on his Facebook page--following his own posting that says, "God give me the strength to make it through this battle."
Gause was ordered released on his own recognizance.
Assistant State's Attorney Theresa Smith said Gause was captured on hospital surveillance footage punching and shoving the 24-year-old victim, who was being transported by Gause and another officer for a mental health evaluation on the night of June 3, 2014.
