Residents Leap Into Action, Stop Car Thief

CHICAGO (CBS) -- When car alarms sounded on one Chicago block, residents didn't just glance out their windows.

They headed outside and helped catch an apparent car thief, CBS 2's Dana Kozlov reports.

Last night, neighbors held the suspect until police arrived.

And it turns out, the first two people, a man and a woman, to take action were off duty police officers.

They stopped a 32-year-old man from burglarizing a white Mercedes on West Wolfram.

According to police, the suspect shoved the man and head-butted the woman in an attempt to get away. But they threw him to the ground.

A passing driver stopped to help, too. So did a dog.

Imagine the surprise of the Mercedes' owner.

"I haven't even looked at my car for four days," said Megan Stevens.

Her car, thanks to the fast actions of others, was unscathed.

Charges are pending against the suspect, police said.
