Appellate Judges May Decide Fate Of Two Dogs Held At City Pound For Last 4 Years

(CBS) -- A Chicago woman is hoping an appellate court will make a decision soon to finally let her bring her dogs home, almost four years after they were confined to cages at Animal Care and Control.

The City of Chicago has been holding two Rottweilers in cages since July 2012. The city wants to euthanize them both.

"They don't deserve to die. They don't deserve to be in cages, or in kennels, this long," says Charlette Wortham, owner of Thumbelina and Moo Moo.

She's allowed to visit - now twice a week. But she says they're not allowed out of their kennels.

"They, to my knowledge, are the only ones that have been there this long, with me appealing the decision," Wortham says.

Chicago Animal Control officials say both dogs were declared dangerous because of two incidents in 2012 and they "have been well-cared for at CACC since they arrived" almost four years ago.

Wortham, who says the dogs have never bitten a person, has appealed the case all the way to the First District Appellate Court. There are stacks of legal briefs from both sides.

"I want to have my dogs back.  I'd love to have my dogs back.  It is my desire to have my dogs back," she says.
