Chicago Students Show Their Art At Prestigious Loop Location

(CBS) -- The Union League Club says it has the largest private art collection in the Midwest outside of the Art Institute. Adding to that for the month of June is the work of 12 high school students.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

The students from Chicago's Little Black Pearl Art and Design Academy in Kenwood are getting a chance to show their paintings at the Loop location.

One is a piece called "Two Faced," by Alexis Green, 16, who is finishing her sophomore year. The painting shows a woman, her white mask peeling off. Below it is a dark face.

"From my point of view, some females actually feel the need to become a different person instead of being comfortable with who they were -- or are - and was born to be," Green explains.

Alexis, who says she is more into graffiti art and animation, says her father is proud of what she's done.

"My dad talks about it all the time. I'm not really the person to do portraits, and for this to be my very first portrait to do, he was very proud," she says.

The exhibit opens June 2 and runs through the month. The theme of the show is "I Am."

Seventeen-year-old Sincere Brannon has the only abstract piece in the show. His painting is titled "Abstract Splatter."

"So I was splattering paint everywhere, having fun.  And it came out great," he says.

Sincere is about to graduate, and then he'll go to college -- art school in Houston.

"I just want to say my painting was in Union League. It's a big accomplishment.  I know every kid can't just do this. It means something," he says.
