Alderman: City Needs To Crack Down On Illegal Tire Dumping

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore

(CBS) -- A Chicago Alderman is calling for a City crackdown on tire shops that illegally dump old tires on the Southwest Side.

Fifteenth Ward Ald. Raymond Lopez says some tire shops have been dumping old, used tires in the Brighton Park and Back of the Yards neighborhoods.

"This isn't the occasional one tire that someone took off their private car," Lopez tells WBBM's Craig Dellimore. "We've had situations where entire abandoned garages have been filled floor to ceiling, with what appear to be used car tires."

Lopez says the city's business regulation arm should ensure that tire shops are keeping accurate records showing which companies are disposing of the used materials.

The Emanuel Administration's Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Department says it already investigates complaints about illegal tired dumping and has issued 300 citations since 2010.

They are assigning staff to work with the alderman's office.
