Walk Raises Awareness Of Suicide Among War Vets

WBBM's Bernie Tafoya

CHICAGO (CBS) -- On the start of this Memorial Day weekend, a walk in Glencoe is raising awareness about suicide among soldiers and military veterans.

The Ruck of Honor 22-mile walk is done to mark the 22 current military or veterans who, on average, kill themselves every day.

Nick Catalano is in the Army Reserves and returned recently from Guantanamo Bay.

"It's sad to see veterans and fellow soldiers committing suicide … taking that way when they know that there's battle buddies just a phone call away that are more than willing to help them out." he said.

The Ruck of Honor walk began three years ago with 30 walkers. Today, more than 1,000 participated, carrying ruck sacks or backpacks.

The walk began in Glencoe, then down the lakefront and ended in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood.
