Navy Pier's New Ferris Wheel Back In Business After Shutdown

(CBS) -- The new Centennial Ferris Wheel at Navy Pier reopened to the public Saturday morning after a glitch Friday night left riders trapped in gondolas for about a half-hour.

Pier officials said Saturday the rides resumed at 10 a.m.

The embarrassing mishap occurred around 8 p.m. Friday. A power outage caused the Ferris wheel to stop, with about 100 riders aboard. No one was injured, and people were given refunds and free-ride vouchers.

The larger, more opulent Ferris wheel replaced the vintage model that sat for years at the popular lakefront attraction. Work crews worked over the winter to install the new model.
