Car Stolen While Stopped For Gasoline On South Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A toddler escaped injury after a car was stolen and nearly struck the child at a gas station on the South Side on Wednesday evening.

The incident happened at a Clark station at Garfield Blvd. and Damen Avenue, on the border of the Back Of The Yards and West Englewood neighborhoods, witnesses tell CBS 2.

The robber sped off in a woman's 2009 black, four-door Kia, almost hitting a child who was standing nearby. That child's father jumped on the hood, and tried to stop the car, but fell off.

A good Samaritan tried to chase the car and also nearly hit the child. Another Samaritan wrapped the child in the blanket.

The car was chased by Chicago police before the car fled onto the Dan Ryan Expressway.

Police then terminated the chase.
