When Craig Sager Really Needed A Beer, A Fan At Wrigley Field Stepped Up

(CBS) Beloved TNT broadcaster Craig Sager was the center of attention at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night, as he threw out the ceremonial first pitch and sang the seventh-inning stretch during the Cubs' 2-1 win against the Dodgers.

It was not long after he was done singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" that Sager -- who's being treated for a recurrence of leukemia -- ran into a small problem. After a whirlwind evening that included meeting Hall of Famer Billy Williams, Sager just wanted a beer. The trouble was that it was just past last call for all the nearby vendors and concessions.

That's where a kind fan stepped in, according to Cubs television play-by-play man Len Kasper.

"We interviewed him in the seventh," Kasper said on 670 The Score. "It was a very quick one-two-three inning, and after he sang a pitch perfect stretch, I was thinking, 'I'd really like to bring him back for the bottom of the seventh.' As we were shaking hands, he goes, 'Guys, can I go have a beer?' I said, 'Of course, go enjoy the rest of your night.'

"Craig went down and said, 'I'm wondering if I could grab a beer somewhere.' Well, they had already closed off all the beer sales, because the seventh inning was over. And a fan had just bought the last beer and heard the story and said, 'Here, take mine.'

"How cool is that? It says it all."

A lifelong Cubs fan, Sager had a blast in his night at Wrigley Field.

"I've done World Cup soccer. I've done the Olympics, the Super Bowls, the World Series and the NBA Finals, PGA Championships, I've done everything," Sager told the Associated Press. "So when they called and asked if I wanted to throw out the first pitch, I was thinking, not only have I never done it, but I never even thought about it. I never even thought about it being possible. So when they called I said, 'Heck, yes!' ... It's a very big thrill for me."
