Bulls' Doug McDermott Tabbed For USA Basketball's Select Team

By Cody Westerlund--

(CBS) Bulls forward Doug McDermott has been named to USA Basketball's 25-man Select Team, which will train from July 18-21 in Las Vegas with the Olympic squad that will compete in Rio de Janeiro in August.

This is McDermott's second stint with the Select Team, as he also worked with Team USA in summer 2014 in the program's preparation for the FIBA World Cup. By participating, it keeps him in the pipeline of USA Basketball and puts him on the radar to be selected for future international competitions.

"Being chosen for the Select Team is an honor and it is an important step in becoming involved in USA Basketball's National Team program in the future," USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo said in a statement. "Current national team players like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, as well as many other outstanding players, got their USA National Team start through a Select Team.

"Participation in this camp provides them with valuable experience at the USA Basketball National Team level, while helping prepare the 2016 USA National Team for its upcoming international competition."

Mike Krzyzewski is Team USA's coach through these Summer Olympics, after which Gregg Popovich will take over for the 2017-'20 cycle. Popovich will oversee the Select Team in Las Vegas.

McDermott may not be the only Bulls player in Las Vegas with Team USA. All-Star Jimmy Butler is hopeful to make the national team that will compete in Rio, though he's facing stiff competition to do so. The 12-man national team roster is expected to be revealed in late June.

Suns guard Devin Booker, 76ers big man Jahlil Okafor, Magic forward Aaron Gordon, Heat forward Justice Winslow, Jazz guard Rodney Hood, Blazers guard C.J. McCollum and Bucks forward Jabari Parker were among some of the other notable players tabbed for the Select Team.
