Tackle Nate Chandler Ready To Compete With Bears

By Chris Emma--

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- Nate Chandler got a chance at Super Bowl glory with the Panthers last season, but he didn't take the field. Then, the offensive tackle who was converted from the defensive line was let loose in March.

Now, Chandler is with the Bears, signed last week to add depth on the offensive line and perhaps push Charles Leno for the starting spot at left tackle.

"It was pretty hard, but I tried not to sulk or get down on myself, because I knew there would be another opportunity for me," Chandler said of being cut and then joining the Bears. "Fortunately enough, I'm here, and I'm glad to be here.

"I feel like there's a good thing going here, and I'm just glad to be a part of it."

Chandler, 27, has just two years of experience at tackle under his belt. He came to Carolina as an undrafted rookie defensive lineman, then converted to guard and eventually tackle, where he started 11 games in 2014.

After his 2014 season was cut short due to a knee injury that required surgery, Chandler reinjured that same knee and was shut down for a second straight season.

"My biggest challenge is getting back to the field, getting my feet wet and getting back out there and competing," Chandler said. "At the same time, the playbook is different, but as far as the plays go, I'm used to the zone plays and those principles."

The Bears have committed to Leno at left tackle and signed Bobby Massie to man the right side. Chandler was recently chosen by the Bears over 2008 first overall pick Jake Long in a tryout and added to the roster to replace Tayo Fabuluje, who was cut last week.

Chandler is eager for his opportunity with the Bears.

"It just shows me that they believe in me," he said. "I visited with other teams, and things didn't work out. It's just a great feeling to have someone believe in the process that I've been going through, and just give me a chance to compete."
