Police Investigate Possible Theft Of Funds At Kendall County Food Pantry

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police in southwest suburban Yorkville have launched an investigation into the possible theft of as much as $200,000 from a food pantry.

Yorkville police said volunteers at the Kendall County Food Pantry came forward about suspicious transactions and possible misuse of funds. The Chicago Tribune reports as much as $200,000 could be involved.

State Rep. Keith Wheeler (R-Oswego), a past chairman of the board of directors at food pantry, said he's not surprised volunteers blew the whistle when they found financial irregularities.

"It's certainly concerning if the sums that are being talked about are actually missing, because those are monies that are meant to help real people in our community who need food. One of the things we pride ourselves on at the food pantry is that they'll volunteer in our organization. It's just neighbors helping neighbors," he said.

Search warrants have been executed at the food pantry, and at a home in Kendall County. Two former volunteers reportedly are the focus of the probe.

Wheeler acknowledged a scandal at the food pantry could hurt donations that help 300 families per week.

The pantry has continued operating as normal amid the investigation.
