White Sox Designate RHP Mat Latos For Assignment, Call Up RHP Tyler Danish

(CBS) With their season reaching a crossroads, the struggling White Sox continue to make moves and are trying to strengthen their rotation.

This time they're banking on that coming via subtraction.

Chicago has designated right-hander Mat Latos for assignment, the team announced Thursday. He was 6-2 with a 4.62 ERA and had really struggled lately.

The 28-year-old Latos signed a one-year deal with the team on Feb. 9. He started really strong, winning his first four starts with a 0.74 ERA. Since then, he hasn't been productive.

Latos registered a 6.41 ERA in five May starts and allowed six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss Tuesday.

In a corresponding move, the White Sox called up 21-year-old right-hander Tyler Danish, who was 3-7 with a 4.42 ERA at Double-A Birmingham this season. He's rated as the organization's 11th-best prospect by MLB.com. Danish has a career 3.39 ERA over four minor league seasons.

Latos is the second pitcher who was in the Opening Day rotation who the White Sox have cut ties with. In early May, they designated left-hander John Danks for assignment, then released him shortly after.

The White Sox (29-30) have lost 20 of their last 26 games to fall to fourth place in the AL Central after holding a six-game lead in the division in the second week of May. They continue to go all in on this season, as they acquired right-hander James Shields from the Padres on Saturday in exchange for two minor leaguers. Shields gave up seven runs in two-plus innings Wednesday in his White Sox debut, an 11-4 loss to the Nationals.
