"You Took My Baby Away from Me!' Teen Dies Shielding Cousin From Gunfire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 26-year-old suspect stood silently in court on Tuesday, charged with killing a student from Urban Prep.

CBS 2's Suzanne LeMignot reports on the life he allegedly took and a family left heartbroken.

"You took my baby away from me! Understand this! There's no peace for you!," said Rickey Fields, whose son, Christopher, 17, was fatally shot, shielding his cousin from the bullets.

Fields vows to be in court for every appearance the accused killer, Deonte Davis, makes.

"Daddy loves you baby! I will always love you," Fields said.

Christopher Fields met his cousin Saturday night near 52nd and South Sangamon and offered to walk her safely home.

As the pair walked, prosecutors say Davis opened fire on people standing in front of a nearby home. The Urban Prep student was shot in the back, while shielding his cousin, with his body.

Prosecutors say four minutes before the shooting, Davis was at a gas station a few blocks away. He was captured on surveillance video, trying to rob security guard Tyron Holloway.

"He put the gun to my head and said, 'Empty your pockets!' I showed him I didn't have nothing. He put the gun back up. Got back in the car and he drove off," Holloway said. "I just thank God. That is all I can do. And I pray for that little boy that got killed."

Davis, 26, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. He was ordered held without bail at a bond hearing Tuesday afternoon.
