For Chicago Student, Distributing Meals Leads To Free Wheels

(CBS) – You've seen contestants win a "brand-new car" on game shows like the "Price is Right."

Monday, that kind of excitement took place at a Chicago public school.

CBS 2's Jeremy Ross reports on what the big winner did to get her new set of wheels.

When you've waited 18 years for your first new car -- and suddenly get it, like Madison Ekern of Whitney Young High School -- you would be in shock, too. She thought she was getting concert tickets, not a mean green 2016 Jeep Wrangler.

She's the captain of the soccer team, and her squad played in a big tournament. There, she qualified for a drawing because of her volunteer work.

Madison is one of about 150 volunteers at Lakeview's Common Pantry.

The organization helps about 1,200 people per month by serving meals and providing food to the needy.

Madison's mom says her daughter volunteered over last four years, finding the time to spend hundreds of hours there.

Her dad couldn't find the words to express his gratitude.

"It's just so important to try to help out. Do whatever you can," Madison says.
