Cubs Place Reliever Clayton Richard On DL, Send Adam Warren To Triple-A For 2 Starts

(CBS) The Cubs have placed struggling left-handed reliever Clayton Richard on the 15-day disabled list with a blister and sent right-hander Adam Warren to Triple-A Iowa so he can get can get a couple starts in.

In corresponding moves, Chicago has promoted right-hander Spencer Patton and left-hander Gerardo Concepcion from Triple-A.

Richard has a 7.30 ERA and 2.19 WHIP this season and has shown little to no consistency.

Regarding Warren, the Cubs want to stretch him out so that he'll be ready to start in the big leagues as they're in the early part of a stretch that features games for each of the next 24 days before the All-Star break. Once Warren makes a start a Triple-A, the Cubs can bring him back up and insert him for a spot start to get the regular five starters an extra day of rest. The plan is for Warren to make two starts at Iowa, one for the Cubs before the All-Star break and then perhaps one for them after the break.

Warren has 4.56 ERA in 25 2/3 innings for the Cubs. All 25 of his appearances have been in relief.

Patton has a 1.04 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 26 innings at Iowa. Concepcion has a 2.60 ERA and 1.44 WHIP in 17 1/3 innings at Triple-A.
