School's Out In Chicago, So Now It's Time For A Summer Plan

CHICAGO (CBS) -- It's a great day for students--the last day of school in Chicago.

On this last day of classes here at the Drake elementary school, joy for the kids.

But for some parents, like Arnette Parker, it's bittersweet.

She will see more of her son, but she wants structure for Victor.

She had to come up with a plan.

"He's going to be involved with a Park District program for autistic children."

Victor will have lots of company. The Chicago Park District is preparing for 40 thousand children to attend its summer day camps in every city neighborhood.

"It's a godsend for most parents," said Regina Hayes, of the Chicago Park District.

Especially for parents who to need to work this summer.

"They can drop them off at 8 o'clock in the morning and pick them up later at 6 o'clock in the evening, so fill up an entire day."

With violence rising in the city, often hurting the very young, non-government organizations and churches are trying to keep kids safe and occupied, too.

Deacon Henry Sawyer is with the Olivet Baptist Church in Bronzeville.

"We always want to do our part. We just don't believe it can be done without the churches and the community bring connected."
