David Ross: Young Cubs Learning On The Fly

(CBS) The Cubs are in the midst of a four-game losing streak, their longest of the season. It comes with Dexter Fowler and Jorge Soler sidelined, while Anthony Rizzo is banged up.

Veteran catcher David Ross isn't surprised, for he expected some struggles at some point. Chicago remains an MLB-best 47-24, nine games ahead of second-place St. Louis in the NL Central.

In Thursday's 4-2 loss to the Marlins, the Cubs started five players age 24 or younger.

"We're learning on the fly, a lot of young guys up right now, very talented," Ross said in an interview with Brian Hanley and Barry Rozner on 670 The Score. "Just teaching them how to have professional at-bats, bring it every day. It's a great group. These guys are getting their feet wet in the big leagues at a time when there's a big bull's-eye on us."

"I try to put things in perspective. I have a way better perspective at 39 than I did at their age. I wasn't even in the big leagues at their age. So there's got to be a little bit of give and take. You got to let these guys learn. They've got great swings. They're having good at-bats.

"We'll be fine."
