No Bail For Gang Member Charged With Shooting Toddler In Woodlawn

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Desmond Bell, the father of a 3-year-old boy who was shot and left paralyzed from the chest down, was not the intended target of the Father's Day drive-by in Woodlawn last weekend.

But Desean Wynn still fired 10 quick shots toward the family's car, as well as a vehicle that was double parked in the 6100 block of South Kimbark, Assistant State's Attorney Lorraine Scaduto said Friday.

The boy, Devon Quinn, will never be able to breathe on his own as a result of his injuries, prosecutors said.

Bell ducked down and threw his body over Devon when Wynn allegedly started firing. However, it was too late. Devon was hit in the right shoulder.

The boy and his father had finished visiting a relative in the South Side neighborhood and were sitting in their car about to leave when Wynn extended his hand from a red Nissan, Scaduto said.

There were other people sitting in their parked cars and outside homes, including members of the Crank Town street gang, Scaduto said.

Wynn belongs to the rival Dro City and was commemorating "Dro Day," honoring a slain member of his gang, Scaduto said.

He was seen slowly driving on Kimbark in Crank Town territory at 6:15 p.m. Sunday.

As Wynn pulled up and started shooting from a partially-rolled-down tinted window, the boy's father saw Wynn's face and recognized him as a member of Dro City, Scaduto said.

Wynn sped off after the shooting and as he drove on 63rd, a Chicago Police pod camera captured him fleeing in the Nissan, Scaduto said.

Meanwhile, Bell got into another car and rushed him to the hospital.

"I was on my way to pick up [the boy's mother] from work, and the car came up and started shooting. I grabbed my son and ducked down. I saw my son was hit and took him straight to the hospital," Bell said earlier this week outside the Comer Children's Hospital's emergency center.

Police found Wynn's abandoned Nissan eight minutes after the shooting in the 5400 block of South Ellis, Scaduto said.

The car had the same front-end damage on the passenger side as was seen in the surveillance footage, Scaduto said.

Bell showed police who his son's shooter was through Facebook, prosecutors said.

Other witnesses also said they saw Wynn, known as "Lil D," fire, Scaduto said.

Ten shell casings from a .40 caliber weapon were recovered from the scene, Scaduto added.

Wynn, who has a GED and is certified as a commercial custodian, was arrested on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old was on parole for a robbery at the time of the shooting, Scaduto said.

The little boy cannot feel his limbs, and is not expected to recover from his paralysis, Scaduto told Judge Laura Sullivan.

Sullivan ordered Wynn, of the 4400 block of South Dearborn, held without bond.

Wynn is charged with attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
