Horseshoe Casino Reopens After Power Outage

(CBS) -- The Horseshoe Casino in Hammond is open now after being shut down for more than 12 hours because of a power outage that started Sunday afternoon.

It is likely a first: the only time the Horseshoe Casino has shut down because of a power outage, says spokeswoman Shannon McKellar.

"There was a power surge about 4:30 p.m. and the power went out.  And our backup generators did not immediately turn on. And so we worked closely with NIPSCO throughout the afternoon and evening to try to determine the cause of the outage," she says.

McKellar says the cause has still not been determined. After that initial surge, the power kept going on and off.

Finally, management decided to close the 24-hour casino for more than 12 hours beginning around 9 p.m.

It reopened at 10 a.m. Monday.

There were a lot of disappointed people.

At least one person sent WBBM photos of slot machines blacked out.

The casino was pretty crowded when it closed down. This weekend there were specials going on because the Hammond casino is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
