CPD Changes Overtime Rules To Allow Officers To Stay In Home Districts
CHICAGO (CBS) -- In the midst of one of the most violent years in recent memory, the Chicago Police Department was shaking things up to get more officers on the streets.
The department was restructuring its overtime rules to improve its a focus on some of the city's highest crime areas.
Police Supt. Eddie Johnson said more officers will be saturating 25 designated high-crime zones, up from 19.
Officers assigned to overtime will remain in the neighborhoods they normally work, in an attempt to continue building relationships with residents and community leaders
Before, officers worked in different neighborhoods during overtime shifts.
The change is another part of the department's summer crime strategy, which also includes increased bike and foot patrols, along with a focus on keeping parks and beaches safe.
