Good Samaritan Rescues Four People From Dangerous Rip Tides

(CBS) -- He saved four lives in one day in dangerous water.

Now, an everyday guy just enjoying a day at the beach in Indiana is being hailed a hero.

CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports.

Off the Washington Park Pier in Michigan City, electronics technician Brian Sadowski and his wife, Michelle, spotted a small child struggling to stay above the water.

"Brian just took everything out of his pockets, and he was gone," Michelle Sadowski says.

Brian Sadowski  says he felt like he was swimming in a rip tide: "It was like being in a big washing machine that was on agitate."

Once he reached the struggling boy, the kid "clamped onto me like bear hug," he says.

That was rescued person number one. He then saved another youngster who was 10 feet off shore. His wife shot video after the rescue.

His work didn't end with the two boys.

He also had to help two adults to safety. They had tried to save the boys but couldn't swim.

"Five people almost drowned out there last night," says Sadowski.

When conditions are this bad and there is potential for underwater current, red flags go up, and no one is allowed to swim and that means no lifeguards are on duty.
