Cubs' David Ross On Reds Hitting Kris Bryant: 'We Got Good Memories'

(CBS) Late in Wednesday's game that well out of reach from the Reds, reliever Jumbo Diaz hit the Cubs' Kris Bryant with a fastball to the backside.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon immediately responded with anger toward the Reds, but the Cubs would move on taking that game by a score of 9-2 and leaving Cincinnati with a three-game sweep.

Speaking to the Mully & Hanley Show on Friday, Cubs catcher David Ross reviewed the situation.

"These things have a way of policing themselves and coming back around," Ross said of the beanball to Bryant. "That game was kind of out of hand. I don't know what their reasoning was. It's hard to judge intent or purpose from the side. It looked pretty obvious that that was on purpose.

"These things have a way of policing themselves and coming back around. At the time, it probably wasn't smart for us to retaliate."

The Cubs didn't retaliate. Instead, they moved on with another victory, further extending their division lead.

These two teams reunite next week at Wrigley Field, with the Cubs hosting the Reds in a four-game series that starts Monday.

"We got good memories, and we play these guys soon," Ross said. "We got to protect our guys. Because you're mad about this or that, you can't go hit out star players. They got more to lose than we do. Sometimes, frustration on bad teams comes out from players. I've been on bad teams before and understand that. They're going through a little rough patch, and I'm sure they're frustrated. But you can't take that out on us because we're hitting balls over the fence."

Ross' Cubs are coming off a tough 4-3 loss to the Mets on Thursday night in New York, where they couldn't hold an early 3-0 lead. The Cubs allowed the Mets to score a pair on a throwing error from Javier Baez in the seventh inning, then stranded the bases loaded in the ninth inning.

Chicago dropped three out of four in Miami before its three-game sweep of Cincinnati. Now, the Cubs are looking to take some games from the Mets, a team that swept them in the NLCS last year.

For the 39-year-old Ross, playing the Mets is the same as any other game.

"I don't look at it as a rivalry," Ross said. "I feel like we go out and try to win all of them. Every team is different from year to year. We're so different from last year, and I'm sure they would say the same thing. We just go in and try to play good baseball each game. Go play some good, clean baseball and try to come out with the 'W.'"
