Chicago Police Warned Of Dallas Sniper Shootings

CHICAGO (CBS) -- News of the deadly ambush of police officers in Dallas was delivered to Chicago police officers, who were warned over their police radio frequency to "exercise extreme caution."

"The Dallas Police Dept is reported 11 officers wounded by gunfire, and now five officers fatally shot," according to an audio transcript. "The offenders were two snipers who were armed with high-powered rifles.

"All officers are urged to exercise extreme caution as a result of the situation. Which is continuing to unfold in Dallas."

The officers were shot when a gunman opened fire during a peaceful protest over two deadly officer-involved shootings in Minnesota and Louisiana.

Chicago police union president Dean Angelo told WBBM's Bernie Tafoya: "This type of an event just brings everything closer to the realization that you are never promised to pull into your driveway ... at the end of your shift. Nothing is guaranteed in this job."

In a statement released Friday morning, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Gugleilmi said: "In light of the tragic events across the country this week, including the unspeakable police assassinations in Dallas, CPD has designated that all officers must be paired up with their partners to increase visibility and strengthen officer safety."
