Rabid Bat Flies Up Woman's Blouse, Bites Her On The Neck

(CBS) -- Will County's animal control administrator says a resident recently came perilously close to contracting a case of rabies.
It was in the Will County village of Crete. A woman was cleaning her pool, according to Dr. LeRoy Schild, the county's animal control administrator.
"She had a bat that was in her pool, and she had scooped it out with her hands and tried to help it to fly, where it could get up to a tree to roost," he explains. "It bit her on the hand, went up her blouse and then bit her on her neck."
Dr. Schild says the woman called animal control.
"The frightening thing is that this lady wasn't concerned about rabies - or even considering it. Her call to our office was in concern for the well-being of this animal," he says.
The bat did have rabies. Now, the woman is getting the shots.
Do not touch wildlife, Schild says, bats in particular.
