Zika Fears Affecting Destination Wedding And Honeymoon Plans

(CBS) -- News of the Zika Virus first made headlines in January when many couples and travelers were making summer plans.

"Six, seven months later, travelers are having second thoughts. I haven't had any wedding cancellations but many guests are cancelling," says Amy Seng, owner of Destinations by Amy.

"People are scared about what the CDC is saying and how accurate the information is, compared to what travelers are experiencing when they actually go onto these islands," she says.

Seng says a third of her business has been affected by fears of Zika.

"That is a low number, knowing that I only do destination wedding and honeymoons. A lot of people that book with me are in their twenties. I've been fairly lucky so far."

Seng says your best bet is research and to obtain travel insurance.

"Definitely talk to your travel agent about what destinations," she says. "If you're looking for a quick getaway, just do your homework. Travel insurance, for sure. If we have travel insurance on the reservation, we can rebook and make changes pretty quickly," said Seng.

Many resorts are doing a lot to spray for bugs and are taking other precautions to keep mosquitos away.

Until then, the travel industry continues to take a wait-and-see attitude.

"The Dominican Republic has been hit the hardest with Zika. I'm very eager to hear from the CDC to find some answers and how we can fix it and get rid of it like West Nile, or SARS or other travel diseases," Seng added. "Pick a destination that you feel comfortable with, make sure you get the travel insurance and then re -evaluate as you get closer to your travel dates and re-book to another location if you have to."
