Lincoln Square Cars Targeted By Gunfire

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Residents of Lincoln Square awoke on Wednesday to find their cars riddled with bullets.

Three vehicles were targeted on West Sunnyside Avenue near North Rockwell Street, CBS 2's Charlie DeMar reports.

Neighbors here say gun violence is such a rarity that most thought they were hearing fireworks but quickly realized they were mistaken.

"We heard a bunch of bangs and pops," Matt Novak said. "I wasn't sure if it was fire crackers or gunshots."

Those pops where bullets piercing Novak's car, and two others on the block around 1 a.m.

"I looked at the car in front of me," Novak said. "It had two bullet holes and the car across from mine had a bullet hole impact on its windshield."

Another neighbor, Megan Helm, said: "A bullet ricocheted and shattered someone's car window. It could have easily been someone's house window."

Diane Danek didn't hear those shots but heard somebody pounding on her side door.

"I was startled and I kind of froze because I was scared," she said.

"It could have accidentally killed someone who was innocent," Helm said. "So yeah, it's a little concerning."

No arrests have been made in this shooting and it is unclear what led up to it or what the motive may have been.
