Police Officer Shoots Man On West Side

CHICAGO (CBS) -- An investigation into an illegal weapons operation in the Austin neighborhood ended with a Chicago police officer shooting a man in the arm and leg.

Police received a tip that an unlicensed auto repair and car wash business near Kilpatrick Avenue and Washington Boulevard was acting as a front for illegally stored weapons.

Around 9 p.m. Saturday, officers from the gang investigation unit went to the business to investigate, and a man matching a suspect description ran off and hid behind a car.

Police said the man then stood up and pointed a gun at the officers; and, in fear for his life, one officer shot the suspect.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

As for the investigation into allegations of an illegal gun operation, police said several guns were found at the business.

"So far, a total of five weapons – including an assault weapon and a weapon with a flashlight and a laser sight on it – have been recovered," Chicago Police Chief of Detectives Eugene Roy said.

Police have not said if there were any arrests in connection to the gun operation.

The Independent Police Review Authority was investigating the shooting. The officer involved has been placed on desk duty for at least 30 days.

Police said the organized crime unit would return to the unlicensed car wash and auto repair business on Sunday to shut it down.
