Theo Epstein On Future Of Himself, Jed Hoyer: 'Not Going Anywhere Until We Have A Big Parade'

(CBS) Good friends and Cubs executives Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have already endured one professional breakup in their careers. They don't plan on going through that experience again until they've reached the pinnacle of the sport.

With his contract as Cubs president of baseball operations set to expire after the season and no new deal in place yet, Epstein assured fans Tuesday that he and Hoyer, the team's general manager, are in Chicago to see the championship goal through.

"This time of year, the focus, appropriately, is on helping our big league club getting to where we need to go," Epstein said during an interview on the Spiegel and Goff Show during a fan luncheon. "Everyone knows we're not going anywhere until we win this thing and have a big parade."

Epstein and Hoyer worked together in Boston back in the 2000s, helping the Red Sox win the World Series in 2004 and 2007. Hoyer then left to become the general manager of the Padres in 2009, a split that was helpful for his career development but also left the two longing for the old days. They were reunited in October 2011 as they each came to Chicago.

"We, along with everyone else in the organization, we have a common goal in mind that neither of us are leaving for until we accomplish something," Epstein said.

Epstein and Hoyer cherish their close relationship.

"What's uncommon and what we can really use to our advantage is the trust when you have this type of (president-GM) arrangement," Epstein said. "Jed was a general manager of his own organization in San Diego. And then coming here with this setup, which is becoming more commonplace, you need fundamental trust. If I didn't trust Jed or we were worried about grabbing credit or placing blame and we didn't have that implicit trust in each other, it wouldn't work."

If Hoyer so chose, he'd be a hot candidate to once again run his own baseball operations department, but while in Chicago he's made clear this is where he wants to be.
