Dexter Fowler Is Rejoining Cubs, Who Also Activate New Addition Mike Montgomery

(CBS) The Cubs have their catalyst back.

Out since June 19 with a right hamstring strain, outfielder Dexter Fowler arrived in Milwaukee on Friday afternoon ahead of Chicago's contest in the evening. While he hasn't yet been officially activated, it's expected that he will be after the team assess his progress and health prior to the game.

Fowler played in both games of a doubleheader at Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, going a combined 1-for-5 with a walk. He played center field in the opener and served as the designated hitter in the nightcap. Afterward, he proclaimed he was ready to return to action for the Cubs.

Fowler is hitting .290 with seven homers, 28 RBIs, 41 runs and quality .398 on-base percentage in 64 games this season. The Cubs were 46-20 when Fowler got injured and have gone 11-17 since.

Chicago is averaging 5.4 runs this season with Fowler and 4.7 runs without, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

In other roster moves, the Cubs activated newly acquired left-hander Mike Montgomery and optioned right-hander Spencer Patton to Triple-A Iowa. Montgomery compiled a 2.34 ERA in 32 appearances for the Mariners, who traded him to the Cubs on Wednesday in a deal that netted them Triple-A first baseman Dan Vogelbach.

Patton has a 5.11 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in nine appearances for the Cubs.

Additionally, outfielders Jorge Soler (hamstring) and Chris Coghlan (ribs) will continue their rehab stints at Double-A Tennessee.
