2 Killed, 10 Wounded In Monday Shootings Across Chicago

CHICAGO (STMW) -- Two people were killed and at least 10 others were wounded in shootings in less than 10 hours Monday on the South and West sides.

A man was killed and a woman critically injured in a shooting at 4:24 p.m. in the South Side Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, according to Chicago Police.

The 43-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were shot while sitting in a vehicle in the 6600 block of South Michigan, police said.

The man was shot in the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner's could not immediately confirm the fatality.

The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, and was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.

At 1:27 p.m., Jonathan Mills, a standout basketball player at North Lawndale and Southern Miss, was shot and killed on the West Side on Monday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

The 26-year-old was shot multiple times at 1:27 p.m in the 4100 block of West Roosevelt Road, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

North Lawndale coach Lewis Thorpe was at the scene. "It's him," Thorpe said. "I'm looking at the body right now."

Mills, the father of two daughters, played with Southern Miss in the NCAA Tournament in 2012. After college, he played basketball overseas.

"He was like a son to me," North Lawndale assistant coach Terry Johnson said. "It's unbelievable. Everyone is just at a loss for words, such a great, great guy.

Monday's latest nonfatal shooting happened about 11 p.m. in the West Pullman neighborhood on the Far South Side.

A 25-year-old man was shot twice in the leg in the first block of East 118th Place, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized.

About 20 minutes earlier, a 32-year-old man was shot in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. He was standing on the sidewalk about 10:40 p.m. in the 5700 block of South Justine when another male exited a vehicle nearby and fired shots, police said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and right ankle and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

At 9:55 p.m., two men, ages 24 and 34, were standing on the sidewalk in the Gresham neighborhood's 7900 block of South Vincennes when a male nearby opened fire, police said. The younger man was shot in the right ankle, while the older man was shot in the left ankle. They were both taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where they were listed in good condition.

Five minutes earlier, an 18-year-old man was shot in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. He was walking on the sidewalk about 9:50 p.m. in the 2400 block of South California when two people approached him and fired shots, police said. He was shot in the buttocks and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Less than an hour earlier, a woman was shot in another Englewood neighborhood attack. The 32-year-old was in a vehicle with two other people in the 6600 block of South Parnell shortly before 9 p.m. when two people walked up and shot her in the left side of her abdomen, police said. She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition stabilized.

About 8:50 p.m., a 35-year-old man was in a vehicle in the 4900 block of West Superior in the West Side Austin neighborhood, when another male walked up and shot him in the right arm, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Approximately five minutes before that, a woman was shot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side. The 30-year-old was walking on the sidewalk about 8:45 p.m. in the 4600 block of South Honore when she heard gunshots and felt pain, police said. She was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition stabilized, police said.

Earlier Monday afternoon, a 40-year-old man was shot in the Riverdale neighborhood on the Far South Side. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the thigh at 7:27 p.m. in the 13300 block of South Corliss Avenue, police said. The man was taken to Christ Medical Center in good condition.
