Chicago Officers Hailed For Touching Act Of Kindness

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two Chicago police officers are getting a lot of attention for a powerful picture on social media.

In the image, the officers are escorting an elderly woman with a walker home.

Jose Haro and Brandon McDonald are both assigned to the 22nd District.

Last Tuesday, they were dispatched to a call about a woman wandering in the street near 95th and Halsted.

"We realized really quickly that she cannot hear," said Haro. "She cannot speak."

The officers used a pad and pen to write questions and learned the woman lived about three blocks away. They decided to walk with her to make sure she got home safely.

A third partner snapped a picture as he followed in a squad car.

The woman reminded McDonald of his grandmothers who have passed away, so he was heartbroken when they got her home and found that it was extremely hot in the house and she had nothing to eat.

That's when officer McDonald decided to go to the grocery store, spending $70 of his own money for food for the woman.

"I just felt it in my heart to make sure she was OK for the next few days at least, you know, because it just seemed like no one was checking on her," McDonald said.

The officers actions brought the woman to tears. It brought McDonald to tears as well

"I mean, my heart was full of joy," he said.

Haro said, "We felt like we made a difference that day."

Since last Tuesday, other officers from the 22nd District have stopped by to check on the woman, and officer McDonald plans to check on her whenever he's on patrol.
