1 Teen Killed, 2 Wounded In South Austin Shooting

CHICAGO (CBS) -- One teenager has died, and two others were wounded in a shooting on the West Side late Tuesday morning.

Police said the shooting happened around 11:10 a.m. near West End and Laporte avenues. The victims were standing on the sidewalk when two gunmen came out of a nearby alley and opened fire.

According to police, one victim was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, after he was shot in the shoulder. Police said he was an adult male, but the Chicago Fire Department said all three victims were teenagers.

Latonya Washington described the sound of gunfire erupting in her Austin neighborhood and then rushing to help a young man, just 13-years-old, who had been shot. His blood, was on her tank top.

"I calmed him down," she told CBS 2's Suzanne LeMignot. "I held his hand, until the ambulance came."

"I was there for him, like I was his sister."

The 13-year-old boy who was shot in both legs was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. A 17-year-old boy who was shot in the shoulder was taken to Stroger Hospital.

The Fire Department said both survivors were in serious-to-critical condition when they went to the hospital, but their conditions have since been stabilized.

The suspects fled north on foot after the shooting.

No one was in custody Tuesday afternoon.
