Police Shoot Suspects In Two Separate Incidents On South Side
(CBS) -- There have been two police-involved shootings Thursday evening, both on Chicago's South Side.
In the first incident, officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress in the 6700 block of South May around 7 p.m., according to the Chicago Police Department. Officers observed a suspect with a gun running through a gangway and ordered him to drop the weapon. When he did not, officers opened fire, striking the suspect, police said.
He was taken to an area hospital in stable condition; a weapon was recovered at the scene, police said.
The Independent Police Review Authority was on the scene and investigating.
In the second police-involved shooting, around 7:30 p.m. at 73rd and Merrill, officers fired at a suspected auto thief when he allegedly rammed a squad car.
The Jaguar convertible had been reported stolen earlier in the day in southwest suburban Bolingbrook. Police blocked it in with two vehicles, but the driver tried to get away, ramming one squad car and a parked vehicle. Two officers opened fire, shooting the suspect.
The driver was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another person in the car was arrested and was being questioned Thursday night, police said.
IPRA is also investigating that incident. The officers were wearing body cameras and their vehicles' cameras were activated.
