Cubs' David Ross On Aroldis Chapman's Heaters: 'Blows Your Mind'

(CBS) New Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman throwing smoke is nothing new. He's been hitting 100-plus mph for his entire seven-year MLB career.

Still, this phenomenon of having such a flame-thrower at the back end of the Cubs bullpen has taken Chicago by storm. When Chapman is in the game, tweets of how hard he threw each and every fastball fill up timelines. Fans at home and in the stadium alike take a glance at the radar gun again and again.

And you know who else is acting the same way? The Cubs players.

"We're doing the same thing on the bench," catcher David Ross said on the Mully and Hanley Show on Friday morning. "It's funny, the game kind of comes to like, 'OK, can he go harder? Can he get to 104? Can he get 105? What's the hardest you're going to see?' You know, it doesn't feel real sometimes when you're in the moment. You're playing the game, but then you look up there and you see 103 and it blows your mind -- 'Man, that's coming in so hot.' It's just cruising in there. It looks so effortless.

"It's really cool. As a catcher, it's funny. You're toying with the idea of like, 'Do I just keep having him throw heaters or do I mix in a slider or a change-up or something here?' His slider is like 91, and those are most guys' fastball. It is comical. You look up there and you feel like you're in the middle of a video game.

"Everybody's just reacting to the scoreboard. I think that's the most fun part, listening to the crowd wait for it. Usually you hear the crowd cheer on a strike. Now they wait until the miles per hour gets up there to go crazy."
