National Night Out: Community, Police Come Together

GARY (CBS) -- The shooting of Laquan McDonald in Chicago.

The ambush of officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge.

Those incidents set a much different tone for this year's annual "Night Out" to stop violence.

In Gary, it was a night of smiles and laughs--and a time to come together and heal.

Tensions have been high between police and African Americans.

Lenetha Patterson said: "We want our children to come home at the end of the day and so there's a lot of conversation now. There's fear that when they leave the house, they won't come back home."

Conversations with her son, Allen, about police are much different now.

"Don't resist, don't argue back," said Allen. "Just sit there and if they're telling you to do something just do it. A lot of parents are letting their kids know about respect for authority."
