Deputy Fires Gun When Cook County Inmate Makes A Break For It

WBBM's Steve Miller

(CBS) – A Cook County Jail inmate attempted an escape from a South Side courthouse late Thursday afternoon, and a deputy fired shots as the inmate was running away, the sheriff's department says.

The incident occurred at 51st and Wentworth when an 18-year-old inmate made a break for it, Cara Smith, chief policy officer for Sheriff Tom Dart, said.

"Our deputies were loading a transportation bus with detainees who'd been in court.  One of the detainees, Jordan Cook, who -- coincidentally -- was in court today on a motion to reduce bond, broke free and started to run away from our deputies."

Smith says a deputy fired two shots but didn't hit anyone.

She says Cook was caught a couple of blocks away by Chicago police.

Smith says Cook has been in custody since July 19 on charges of possession of a firearm at a school, reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
