CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed three current cases of Zika virus in pregnant women in Illinois.

The department said there have been a total of 46 Zika cases reported in the state; 15 in males, 31 in females. Only three of those females are pregnant.

As has been widely reported, the Zika virus has been linked to birth defects.

A department spokeswoman said all 46 cases were acquired outside the 50 states. At least one of the cases has been traced to Puerto Rico. Most others have been traced to Haiti and Honduras.
