Suburban Mayor Charged After Punching Youth-Baseball Umpire: Officials

(CBS) -- Will County prosecutors have charged the 50-year-old mayor of Monee with two felony counts of aggravated battery -- accusing him of punching a children's baseball game umpire in the face two months ago.

WBBM's Steve Miller reports.

The confrontation began, authorities say, when the umpire did not call a strike on a player, to give her another chance. The players were 7 and 8 years old.

Monee Mayor Jay Farquhar was a coach. After the umpire failed to call a strike, authorities say, Farquhar called him a drunk and then allegedly punched him in the face and apparently broke his jaw.

The mayor has said he acted in self-defense.

An arrest warrant has been issued, and Farquhar was expected to turn himself in over the weekend.
