Schaumburg Boomers Offer Tim Tebow A Contract

(CBS) After news broke Tuesday morning that former NFL quarterback and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow is pursuing a professional baseball career, it didn't take long for a local team to act on that knowledge.

The Schaumburg Boomers, an independent team that plays in the Frontier League, have offered Tebow a contract.

"We're looking for an athletic outfielder who can bring some leadership and competitiveness into the clubhouse," Boomers manager Jamie Bennett said in a statement. "Tebow brings all of those characteristics and then some. I think he'd be a great fit here in Schaumburg."

Addded Boomers general manager Pete Laven: "I understand that Tim's ultimate goal is to make it to the major leagues, just like every other guy on our team. With our proximity to Chicago and the fact that major league scouts come through our park on a regular basis, I think this is the perfect situation for Tim to showcase his skills in a game situation."

The Boomers didn't reveal how much the contract offer was for, but ESPN's Darren Rovell reported that it would pay $600 a month.
