Palos Community Hospital Set To Reopen Monday After Rabid-Bat Scare

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights found bats Aug. 4 in the obstetrics unit.

The unit was closed, said a hospital spokesman. The bats never came in contact with patients or staff.

Two bats were sent to Cook County Animal Control for testing. One of those bats was rabid, said Cook County officials. The other bat did not have rabies.

The county sent fliers to everyone in a one-mile radius of Palos Community Hospital, WBBM's Steve Miller reports. The alert did not mention Palos Community Hospital by name, only an approximate address in Palos Heights.

A spokesman for Palos Community Hospital said there has been construction going on, which is to believe how the bats go in.

The unit has been thoroughly inspected and the hospital is "ready to move forward."

The OB unit, which has been closed for 8 days, is reopening Monday morning.
